Macondo - II

Instrumental rock made with gusto and prowess, Beijing outfit Macondo return with their sophomore release, aptly titled II. Tracing the journey of a lone human after a catastrophic event, the album is told in seven chapters and unfolds much like a heavy-handed science fiction short story, epic in its themes and potent in its imagery. With elements of mathcore, prog rock, and synth-laden post rock abound - they’re heavy in the best possible way, adhering closer to the taut musicality of heavy metal acts yet not without its moments of tranquility. Like Phillip Glass on steroids Macondo packs a punch.

CSBQ - 年轻的朋友你要去向哪

Their second album in over a year, Changsha punk confidants CSBQ steer clear of the anger of their debut and try to find peace of mind in the crazy world around them. Not so much a call to arms but a plead for a future where one’s lust for life hasn’t been squandered by the fight ahead - the music resonates deeply, melancholic yet enduring. That fiery passion takes on a different shape here - heard through the folksy piano chords, the whistle flute, saxophone, and even ukulele - akin to a late-night pub forever playing its last song. As the band states, the ‘struggle for freedom should be the greatest romance in the world’. Rock on.

GaiWaEr 街娃 - PECT

Hardcore doesn’t get much better than Gaiwaer. As old school as their sound is, their music never once feels tired or false - it comes out firing on all cylinders, taking down everything in its path. The second half to their EP ‘Res’ from last summer, ‘Pect’ finds the Chengdu staples digging into their brand of hardcore with conviction and precision - even finding time to allow their more affectionate side to rear its head. Crunchy, potent, and highly combustible - Gaiwaer are the heart and soul of hardcore in Sichuan for good reason.

SHIFT/CTRL - III

Merging heavy riffs with melodic vocals it’s a sound that’s bombastic and shameless in its arena rock sensibilities, rock-n-bass trio SHIFT/CTRL feels like a glam metal band transported to modern times, touching upon everything from prog rock to grunge within their alluring sound. And while this style (or era) of music definitely skipped younger me, there’s no denying the gusto they hit those falsettos with and the stark and powerful musicality they attack each song with on their EP.
